Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr
A time of reflection and celebration at Maria Orphanage and throughout Bangladesh.
Ramadan is a holy month designed for prayer and fasting and being around loved ones. It is a month of charity and generosity, and a time of spiritual reflection and practice of self-restraint. The end of Ramadan is a celebration known as Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the major holidays in Bangladesh.
How is Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated? The joy and happiness of Eid are spread to all the citizens of Bangladesh, regardless of their religion. Presenting Eid greeting cards, buying new clothes, “returning to root” or going back to one’s home district from the busy city, finding the moon suspense (Eid will happen the next day only if the new moon is seen the night before), girls busy coloring hands with hena (as soon as Eid is confirmed), visiting graves of loved ones, going for Eid prayer in a special field called “Eidgah” wearing the special “Panjabi-Payjama” dress, post-prayer everyone embrace each-other formally (people known or not), distributing a small amount of money called “Eidi” or “Salami” to small children, having Eid special foods, and visiting relatives and friends wearing new clothes. This continues for 2-3 days.
